On June 29, 2021, Director of the I&JPN Content & Jurisdiction Program Frane Maroevic presented at EuroDIG 2021 how the tools for cross-border cooperation developed by the I&J Policy Network can support the implementation and enforcement of the upcoming European Union Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act. He participated as a panelist in a EuroDIG Workshop “Digital services regulation – opportunities and challenges – WS 01 2021”.

The European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG) is an open multi-stakeholder platform to exchange views about the internet and how it is governed. First organised in 2008, the annual conference is held in a different European city every year. In 2021 the conference took place as a virtual meeting from June 28 – 30, 2021.

The Workshop provided an exchange on what the European Union has in store when it comes to regulating digital markets and services and stimulating their functioning as well as a look at the European Commission-proposed Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act and what they (could) mean for digital companies, end-users, and the Internet itself, within and beyond the EU.

The session started with a presentation by the European Commission of the Digital Services Act package (Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act) including an overview of the ongoing legislative process. It was followed by three sub-sessions of 40 minutes each devoted to the three topics:

  1. Competition and platform regulation
  2. Content regulation and moderation
  3. Implementation and enforcement
