On April 6, 2020, Bertrand de La Chapelle, Executive Director of the Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network (I&JPN), participated as a panelist in a workshop "Infrastructure challenges: building a borderless Internet and the threats of blockages and fragmentation" organized by the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br), Internet Governance School (EGI).
The workshop focused on the disputes around network geolocation strategies, the need for interconnection regardless of national borders, and the legitimacy of the current governance arenas over infrastructure and protocols.
Highlighting the need for cooperation between the actors in various formats to address the challenges of the digital society, Mr de La Chapelle highlighted the findings from a new I&JPN Report “We Need to Talk About Data: Framing the Debate Around the Free Flow of Data and Data Sovereignty”.
“The real issue is data and what is at stake is the governance of the Datasphere. The Datasphere is the entirety of the data which is being produced and that underpins almost all of human activities today.”, said Bertrand de La Chapelle, Executive Director, I&JPN.
The new I&JPN Report presents concerns and perspectives around the current use of the concepts “Free Flow of Data” and “Data Sovereignty” and offers key recommendations on how to move forward to foster a collaborative discussion on how to organize our common Datasphere.
